Surrounded by baskets and jars, kitchen appliances and books, clothing and knickknacks, Catalina Island Medical Center’s most dedicated volunteers raise tens of thousands of dollars a year.
Located in the Post Office Arcade and open about 20 hours a week, the Avalon Hospital Auxiliary’s Unloved Gift Shop has been a source of support for more than 40 years. Its volunteer staff continues to raise funds for the medical center, providing its financial contributions in the area of patient care. From laboratory equipment to ophthalmoscopes, the Auxiliary’s sales at the shop have allowed Catalina Island Medical Center to provide services to its patients that it wouldn’t be able to provide otherwise.
In the last 42 years, more than $700,000 worth of equipment has been provided to improve the lives of the medical center’s patients. That equipment includes hundreds of items, ranging from shower curtains to emergency resuscitation bags.
The Auxiliary is able to provide that level of support because of the dedication of volunteers who work the cash register, sort donations, price merchandise and do the shop’s accounting. Anyone who would like to volunteer can stop by the shop and discuss their availability. Donations of clean, gently used items in good working order are also accepted during business hours.
